Running a small business is no small feat. I’ve seen it firsthand. Over the past 12 years, I’ve worked alongside business owners across the Gold Coast and beyond as a bookkeeper and advisor, and now as the founder of Gold Coast Virtual CFO. I’ve walked with them through growth, struggle, and everything in between.

But there’s a pattern I’ve seen too often, and it’s one that inspired me to take a stand.

What is the big assumption that can cost small businesses dearly? That their tax accountant is on top of everything.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Many business owners assume their tax accountant is monitoring their finances throughout the year. But in reality, most accountants are focused on tax time. They’re not actively managing your cash flow, monitoring daily performance, or alerting you to upcoming financial risks. That’s not a criticism; it’s just how the traditional compliance model works.

What I Kept Seeing

Too many of my clients, hardworking, capable business owners, were blindsided:

• Cash flow issues were caught too late

• Suppliers were unpaid, and relationships were damaged

• ATO debts were snowballing

Time and again, I found myself stepping in. Whether it was fixing broken systems, chasing urgent financial answers, or helping clients understand what was happening, I was there to bridge the gap.

However, not all small businesses are lucky enough to have someone like me on their side, equipped with the qualifications and experience to step in during challenging times. That worried me the most.

I founded Gold Coast Virtual CFO to change that.
